Rescuing the Captives

MDE Member Kirsten* is launching a business which will provide employment and on-the-job training for individuals seeking a way out of the sex industry. In her initial work in Thailand, Kirsten collaborated with an organization that ran a cafe and training school for baristas and bakers. While she observed significant advancements in the skills and spiritual well-being of the trainees, it became evident that some lacked the necessary aptitude to secure well-paying jobs. Her concern became a matter of prayer and a business opportunity.

While visiting the United States on a visa trip, Kirsten and her niece went to a selfie studio. It was a fun and creative space for unique self-portraits, and it sparked an innovative business idea. In Thailand, there are 51.8 million active social media users who often look for trendy locations for post-worthy photos. Kirsten recognized the potential to start a selfie studio that would offer a positive and wholesome experience for customers while also providing alternative job opportunities for individuals transitioning out of the sex industry.

On her journey to launch her business idea, Kirsten received coaching from a BAM incubator. They helped her develop a case study to validate her business concept, assess its viability, and confirm its potential for success. In June, Kirsten was matched with a BAM Team Manager through MDE. Susan*, an experienced entrepreneur who engages with business students and participates in business accelerators, has been helping Kirsten build her business plan and refine her pitch to seek financial backing. Securing funding–and she is already 50% there–will bring Kirsten one step closer to realizing her goal.

Throughout her journey in business and mission, Kirsten has encountered challenges that have ultimately strengthened her and prepared her for the unique aspects of Thailand’s business landscape. She has returned to her original vision with resolve, saying, “I can’t not do this!” It is reminiscent of when the disciples became aware of the needs of the crowd, and were told, “You feed them.” We all know the story (Matt 14:13-21). They found their sufficiency not in themselves but in the One they obeyed.
